The Kaua’i Babe Ruth All-stars advanced to the championship game by eliminating the Maui Red 15-14 on Saturday at the Iron Maehara Stadium in Kahului, Maui.
Kaua’i utilized five pitchers who combined for the win with Alec Reichle going a perfect 5-5 including a double in that win. Jake Oketani hit 3-3 with a double, along with Shawn Yadao 3-5, Clarence Aki 2-4, and Casey Oketani 2-5.
Maui’s top hitters included J. Agcaoili (3-4) with a triple, I. Mande (3-4), J. Miyahara (2-3) with a double and a homerun, Roy Alcoran (2-4), and Marcus Makia (2-5).
Earlier on Saturday, Kaua’i was handed its first loss by the Big Island all-stars 4-2 despite Kaua’i outhitting the Big Island 7- 4.
The Big Islanders put together 4 runs on 4 timely singles each by B. Kawazoe, W. Shikuma, T. Usui & K. Palea.
Leading hitters for Kauai were Alec Reichle 2-3, Mikey Yaris 1-2 (double), Jake Oketani, Casey Oketani, Michael Ishibashi and Andrew Phillips all contributing a hit a piece.
The winning pitcher for the Big Islanders was Bruce Nagata, while Mikey Yaris picked up the loss.
Sunday, Kaua’i faced the undefeated Big Island team for the championship, and banking on a two-RBI triple in the eighth inning, took the opener 5-3 behind the bat of Mikey Yaris to force the second contest.
Kaua’i dropped that encounter 5-3 giving the state title to the Big Island team on Sunday.
This was the first year for the Kaua’i team to be involved in the Babe Ruth league, and one parent noticed that due to some late rule changes, some of the squads touted players 19 years old while Kaua’i’s team was limited to 18 year-olds.
