PUHI — Kauai soccer teams in the Under 12 Boys, Under 12 Girls, and Under 14 Girls divisions had an opportunity to match their mettle against five visiting squads from California as the Kauai Cup kicked off on Friday at the Island School soccer complex.
Games were played on two fields simultaneously from 9:30 a.m. until the sun set.
The championships for the three divisions will be settled starting at 9:30 a.m. today for the Under 12 Boys division.
That contest will be followed by the Under 12 Girls championship scheduled to start at 11 a.m. with the title for the Under 14 Girls getting underway at 12:30 p.m.
Glenn Phillips of Newbury, CA is the coach for the visiting Panthers, an Under 12 Boys squad who suffered opening day losses to the Arroyo United Cougars, another visiting team coached by Don Sheppard of La Canada, CA.
Following their 7-1 loss at the hands of the Cougars, the Panthers dropped their second contest 2-1 to the Titans of Hanalei coached by Tom Kandelaria while the Cougars matched up with the Titans for the final game Friday.
Shannon Moody of Whittier, CA coaches the Team USA, an Under 12 girls squad who were shut down by the Eastside Girls 5-0, and the Chicks Who Rip 3-0.
The Eastside Girls are coached by Kevin Devitt while Shari Shimabukuro coaches the Chicks Who Rip.
Kevin Mescado of La Canada, CA is the coach of the visiting Arroyo United Pumas, an Under 12 Boys team who ended tying with Motiv 8, 2-2 before blanking the Lihue Go Hard 3-0.
Todd Fuerte is the coach of Motiv 8 while Mario Longboy coaches the Lihue Go Hard who dropped their second contest of the day to Motiv 8, 3-1.
Pete Triana of Hawthorne, CA coaches the Grass Kickers who battled the Kauai Soccer Club to a 0-0 tie after being shut down by the Blue Dolphins 5-0. Gwen Tamura of Kilauea coaches the Under 14 girls Kauai Soccer Club while Gary Towner is at the helm of the Blue Dolphins.
Championship pairings were determined following a full day of elimination play Saturday.
