At about 3:20 p.m. Thursday, a woman accidentally flipped her car into hau bushes at the north end of the narrow, one-lane wooden bridges in Wainiha erected as “temporary” replacements after the tsunami of 1957.
The woman, whose name was not known, suffered a few small cuts on her legs and arms. She was the only occupant of the car. The vehicle did not slide down very far from the roadway, and off-duty firefighters climbed down to extricate the woman from her car. It took about 10 minutes to get her out.
Paramedics from American Medical Response Medic 22 also assessed the victim for injuries. As she was not seriously injured, she refused transportation to the hospital emergency room. Firefighters from Hanalei station Rescue 1 also responded to the incident.
