KOLOA — It has only been two weeks since Phil and his son Spencer Regan began their 10-week journey surfing the waves of America’s best beaches.
No, they’re not trying to break any records. They are simply pursuing this adventure to fulfill a dream.
That dream is to provide a nurturing environment, on the Hawaiian island of Molokai, where parents can spend quality time with their children among other things.
Surfing will be one of many activities to be offered at this special place, a place called Camp Makua.
In an effort to make Camp Makua a reality, the funds raised from the Surf Across America tour will go toward building a permanent facility dedicated to fostering parents’ relationships with their children and developing scholarships to fund a place to stay at the camp for those who cannot afford it.
The Regans started at “The Cove” in Aberdeen, WA before heading as far as “Lido West” on Long Island, NY.
The pair will arrive in each location during the week and begin promoting a weekend surfing event.
For each event, fathers and their children will be invited to surf with the Regans. Surfboards, along with instruction, will be available for up to 50 participants, at no cost to the parents.
“This will be a day at the beach for the kids and their dads,” Phil Regan said. “It is a time for them to enjoy the dynamics of surfing.”
After Washington state, the tour continues on in Oregon, Texas, Florida, South and North Carolina, New Jersey and finally in New York.
In major cities such as Los Angeles and New York, partner Buzzy Kerbox will join the Regans.
Kerbox will be sharing his experience and teaching skills with the kids and their dads who participate in Surf Across America.
Kerbox has been surfing for 30 years and operates a school in Maui where he teaches adults and children how to “safely harness the energy of the ocean and become surfers in one lesson.”
Funds will be raised via sponsorships and voluntary contributions from those who attend the events, to participate or watch.
Camp Makua’s goal is to provide parents with the opportunity to share concentrated time with their kids and will carry over into their daily lives.
“This was an enlightening experience for me,” Phil Regan said.
The Regans feel strongly about sharing their passion for surfing and making it work for other parents and their kids.
Surfing across the best beaches in the country, the Regans invite you to share in their exciting Surf Across America tour.
