KALAHEO — Kierra Barba and Brytney Lanning led the Westside Hornets I with eight points apiece as the Hornets I notched a 23-11 win over the Kapaa Mystics in the KYBA summer league games played Thursday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Rebekah Duncan led the Mystics with six points, all coming from Mystics’ field goals, in the Girls 14 Under loss.
Wailua 23, Kauai Fire Raiders 30
Wailua’s Kennilyn Nakamura notched 22 of the team’s 23 game points, but the effort fell short as the Kauai Fire Raiders controlled the contest 30-23 in the Girls 14 Under contest, Rachel Taira and Brandi Kohatsu combining for 19 points in the win.
Taira finished with ten points while Kohatsu contributed nine points in the win.
Savannah Kupihea, finishing one-for-two on the free throw line, rounded out the Wailua scoring, Wailua outgunning the Fire Raiders 7-6, 11-6 in the first and third quarters.
Westside Hornets 43, Lihue Breakaway 31
Chad Barba and Alden Lahip exploded for eight first quarter points apiece as the Hornets held off a concerted effort by the Lihue Breakaway in the Boys 14 Under contest that wrapped up the evening in Kalaheo with the Hornets taking the 43-31 contest.
Barba topped the scoring with a game-high 20 points, adding eight in the second half while Lahip finished with ten points, all coming in the first half.
Pono Perez swished a trey in the opening frame, but the Breakaway could not overcome the quick Hornet defense in their loss.
Ira Nishi topped the Breakaway scoring with eight points, six coming in the second half.
Micah Alayvilla also added six points in the second half, accounting for his game-total six digits with Perez and Tyrus Ceria-Lux each adding five points in the loss.
On Wednesday at the Kalaheo Neighbohood Center Maluhia States scored 14 points in helping the Kapaa Big D’ win 42-2 over the Magic 2 in boys 10 and under community basketball action.
Michael Tabata tallied Magic 2’s lone points.
In a boys 17 and under game, the Southside Boys took a 52-45 win over the Westsiders with Jeremy Manuel scoring 18 points for Southside and Jordan Shea added 12 for the Westsiders.
In Kilauea, the Westside Hornets earned a 39-20 win over Kanu in a girls 10 and under game. Tanisha Defabian scored 15 points for the Hornets while Chancen Bateman added 13 for Kanu.
Kimiko Kuwabara and Kieren Pond combined for 10 points in paving the Kilauea Hui’s 27-10 victory over the Westside Hornets in a girls 14 and under game.
Natasha Acosta scored five for the Hornets.
Alec Reichle scored 16 points in lifting the Lihue Kings to a 53-34 boys 17 and under win over Northshore. Randy Vicoy poured in 16 for Northshore.
