The very popular Nawiliwili Yacht Club’s Father’s Day Keiki Fishing tournament once again brought an enthusiastic group of youngsters to the Nawiliwili small boat harbor in anticipation of catching the big one.’
This year it was 5-year old Alexandra Kua who took top honors with two barracuda, one opu, five aholehole and two big crabs.
Other winners included Michelle Bailey (most fish), Keilen Shigematsu (smallest fish), Anne Bergmann (prettiest fish), Casey Loo (biggest wrasse), Howard Kanahele (biggest puffer), Lindzie Asuncion (fattest weke), Shay Chun (most colorful and biggest perch), Aaron Salvador (ugliest fish), Nicholas Bieker (biggest variety), Kiani Felipe-Higa (biggest papio).
Other awards were given for such categories as shiniest papio, smallest puffer, smallest crab, most crabs and there was even a prize for the best fish that got away story.’
All of the keiki were winners and thanks to the generosity of the contributing sponsors, every keiki went home with a prize of their choice.
This event was a success due to the hard work of its organizer Becky Chatham who was assisted by Lonna Patricks and Sharon Gibson, and on event day’, many NYC volunteers assisted with various duties.
For registration, Dave and Juanice Biederman, Carmela DeMarco, Sheri Schepker, Becky Sweat and Jerry Bryant helped.
The judges included Gail Spicuzza, Jerry Bryant and Karen Cole.
The Hot Dog Chef was Arnold Owens and the announcer was Woodie Cole.
Tom Harns, Ed Schepker, Ron Sailor, Jerry McKenna, Linda Buchbauer, and Kevin Pyle all helped with setup, safety, security and other facets of the event.
