Insurance man Paul Shinseki, brother of Gen. Eric K. Shinseki, the U.S. Army chief of staff who retires tomorrow, is leading a large contingent of family and friends to Washington, D.C., for the retirement ceremony.
Kauai native Eric K. Shinseki moved into illustrious company when he was named the Army chief of staff, known as CSA (chief of staff of the Army) at Army headquarters in the Pentagon.
The Kauai High School graduate is ending his 38-year Army career that included service in Vietnam and command of U.S. peacekeeping forces in Bosnia. He is a West Point graduate, Class of 1965, and holds a Master of Arts Degree in English Literature from Duke University .
Shinseki assumed his duties as chief of staff on June, 22 1999.
Former U.S. presidents, like George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and Dwight David Eisenhower, people who have Army bases named for them, like Tasker Howard Bliss, and a long list of former generals whose names live on in armored vehicles, like John Joseph Pershing, Douglas MacArthur, and Omar Nelson Bradley, are on the list of Army chiefs of staff.
No successor for Shinseki has yet been named.
Warren Haruki, Kauai native and head of Verizon Hawaii, is in Washington for the ceremonies. Haruki’s mother and Mrs. Eric Shinseki are sisters.
Not able to make the trip is Gen. Shinseki’s mother, Fudeko Shinseki of Lihue. At 92, she is not strong enough to make the long trip, according to her daughter.
