A new course at Kauai Community College, the Food Industry Career Pathways Program, begins at the Puhi campus next Monday, June 2.
Taught by Glenn Hontz, Ralph Kouchi and Bill Blackburn, the program runs for three consecutive semesters, from this summer through the spring semester, 2004.
Major components of the program include instruction in basic business skills, and instruction in major features of the food industry.
The instructional program is augmented by a series of internship assignments and related field experiences designed to provide students with hands-on involvement in food production, processing and marketing.
Attendance all three semesters is required to successfully complete the program. Tuition is $500 per semester, though there are a limited number of paid internships available to qualified candidates, based on need and availability of funds. Supplies cost $160 per semester.
Graduates of the program will receive individualized assistance in job placement, or loan procurement for business start-ups or expansion of existing businesses.
Guidance will be provided for those interested in pursuing higher education which could lead to advanced careers in the food industry.
Each semester includes 45 hours of classroom instruction and 75 hours of internship experiences at locations in the food industry.
