Construction is expected to start next month, and take around a year, to upgrade Lihu’e Airport, including moving the National Weather Service facility to another portion of the airport.
Gov. Linda Lingle this week announced the release of $3,623,000 in state funds for capital improvement projects at Lihu’e Airport, part of a $14-million upgrade funded mostly by the federal government.
The state funds will be used for the construction of a general-aviation apron, or aircraft parking area, which will allow aircraft to have better access to airport businesses for repairs, supplies and other services.
The work also will include constructing two taxiways to the apron, installing apron and taxiway lights, and adding two wash racks with oil and water separators.
Once the apron is completed, airport tenants will be allowed to permanently rebuild facilities destroyed by Hurricane ‘Iniki, Lingle said.
Federal funding for the project totals $10,372,968. Construction is scheduled to start in June, and is expected to be completed in May 2004.
“The state is committed to improving and upgrading our airport facilities to ensure reliable travel for our residents and visitors, as well as air-cargo transportation,” said Lingle.
