A four-foot-high carved monkey pod copy of the County of Kaua’i seal is being restored by a Big Island man.
The wooden seal is located in the center of the “Round Building” on Rice Street, within the county’s civic center.
Sculptor Chris De Anda is grinding, refinishing and touching up a gold leaf banner in his work on the seal.
De Anda carved the seal in 1995 from two slabs of monkey pod taken from a tree in Koke’e knocked down by the high winds of Hurricane ‘Iniki.
He donated the wood seal to the people of Kaua’i at a time when the island was still recovering from hurricane damage.
De Anda now lives along the coast at Kealakekua Bay in South Kona on the Big Island, and is staying with his uncle Vic De Anda while back on Kaua’i.
In refinishing the wood, De Anda will use a glossy automotive finish to seal the wood, once a few spots of dry rot are cleaned out. The job will take him several days to complete.
