Racers hit the strip

Theme of event is NHRA Street Legal program — Fans of drag racing will get a treat on Saturday when the Garden Island Racing Association will hold races at the Kaua’i Racing Park.

Trial runs begin at the park, which is an NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) sanctioned dragstrip, at 2 p.m. and run until 6 p.m.

Gates will open at noon for spectators.

Technical inspections run from noon to 3 p.m.

The admission for the event is $10 per spectator.

At last year’s event in April, approximately 1,500 spectators came out to watch the races.

The theme for Saturday’s event is the NHRA Street Legal Program, which is designed to promote education for the public about the differences betweeen illegal street racing and NHRA Street Legal drag racing.

Several objectives of the program include providing street racers a safe, controlled environment to compete and provide tools to NHRA member tracks to help them develop and build a Street Legal program and encourage street racers to compete legally.
