Legislators Rep. Lynn Finnegan and Sen. Sam Slom took a break Tuesday from the State Captiol to give a Tuesday evening talk on behalf of Gov. Linda Lingle before a gathering of Kaua’i Republicans.
Slom is a well-known supporter of small businesses in Hawai’i and represents the Hawai’i Kai-Kahala district in Honolulu. Finnegan represents the Lower Pearlridge-Moanalua Gardens district in west Honolulu.
In an interview with The Garden Island, Slom said a recent GOP poll showed over 70 percent of Kauaians want to see brought to a vote on an election year ballot Lingle’s concept of having separate school districts for each county in Hawai’i.
He said at the talk he would be emphasizing Lingle’s plans for her three “E” – Ethics back in state government, Education reform in Hawai’i’s public schools and an improved Economy.
Slom said Kaua’i’s connection to the Lingle administration isn’t as strong as other counties because all of Kaua’i’s legislators are Democrats. “There’s no one tuned in to the administration,” he said.
He said the Lingle administration is becoming “transparent” to voters in regards to public access to information about what is going on in state government. The release in advance this week of the names of judicial candidates for state courts is something that hasn’t been seen in a while, he said, claiming past state administrations usually held back the names of judicial candidates until they were confirmed.
