Raiders win regatta

NAWILIWILI – The Kapa’a High School varsity girls team nosed out the Kaua’i High School Red Raider team by a scant .26 second, but Kaua’i High School charged back in the remaining events to take the first KIF Paddling Regatta with 5 points overall with Kapa’a being relegated to second place with 3 points.

The Island School Navigators, making their first appearance in the KIF Regatta, took the top end of the Coed (mixed) Varsity competition over the strong challenge of the Waimea Menehune crew 4:46.78 to 4:47.64 to end the day in third place overall with a point in the standings.

The Navigators also fielded a crew in the varsity boys field, but was edged out by the Menehune by just .28 of a second in the Varsity Boys ‘B’ race.

Kaua’i dominated the Boys Varsity ‘A’ race with a strong showing off the line and maintaining the lead for a 4:38.64 time over the 1/2-mile course, almost 20 seconds better than second place Kapa’a’s 4:58.77 time.

The power stroking of the boys and girls teams from Raiderland again proved itself in the Varsity Mixed race where the Raiders jumped off the start and sluiced past the finish line with a 4:19.84 time, almost 27 seconds ahead of the Navigators.

Kula, another new entry into the KIF Paddling arena, will be hosting this week’s regatta which is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 1, at 10 a.m.
