Cold composting

Allison Fraley, the county’s recycling coordinator, is the center of attention as preschoolers from the Lihu’e Hongwanji Nursery watch her water down a layer of compost they added to the recycling center’s cold composting bins on Tuesday. About 50 of the youngsters showed up Tuesday morning armed with bags of recycleable materials and had a hands-on opportunity to see what happens to all the materials they brought to the Ahukini Road center. Fraley noted that this is the first time she’s had a group this young.
