Herbert William Fune, Sr. died peacefully at home in Kalaheo on Dec. 13, 2002, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Koloa on March 9, 1936. His career with the sugar industry lasted 46 years, beginning at McBryde Plantation in 1952 and finally retired as a lead sugar processor at Lihu’e Plantation in 1998. He also worked as a groundskeeper and maintenance man at Olu Pua Gardens for 28 years.
Herbert was preceded in death by his father: Manuel, sister Patricia and infant son Joseph Benito Fune. He is survived by his mother: Anna Freitas Fune of Kalaheo, his beloved wife Rosita Benito, and six children: Herbert William, Jr. (Adela) of Koloa, Desiree Ann Yadao of Kaneohoe, Curtney Andrew, Sr. of Lawai, Ryan Manuel of Denver, Colo., Bradley Patrick (Lorena) of ‘Ele’ele, Kevin Fredrick (Shelcie) of Hanapepe. Herbert is the beloved Papa to 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He will be missed by Sharilyn, Eric, Jonathan, LeinaRose, Benny, Curtney Jr. (Lani Aguinaldo), Christopher, Sierra, Bronson, Jordyn, Justin, Aaron and Andrew.
Herbert is also loved by his sister: Cathline (Richard) Broyles of Kekaha, brothers: James (Theresa) Fune of Hanamaulu, and Richard (Pat) Fune of San Francisco, sisters-in-law: Senaida (Harvey) Kinoshita of Lihu’e, Ida (Salvador) Corrales of Los Angeles and many other nieces, nephews, friends, family, neighbors and co-workers.
Private services following cremation will be officiated by Father Christopher Keahi at Sacred Hearts Church in ‘Ele’ele. Arrangements by Borthwick Mortuary.
Katherine Hazard
Katherine “Kay” Hazard passed away in Arizona on Dec. 3, 2002 at the age of 78.
Born in Redondo Beach, California on April 12, 1924. She spent a large part of her life on Kauai 1962 to 1987. She owned the local resort shop business called Kay O’ Kauai.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Roger W. Hazard. She is survived by her children: Melodie Beamer, Cheryl Konn, Richard Mullins & Larry Mullins, 8 grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family for a Burial and Remembrance service on Dec. 23, 11 a.m. at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Kapaa.
Patsy Shigematsu
Patsy Misao Shigematsu of Koloa, Kauai, died on Dec. 16, 2002 at Straub Hospital, at the age of 75.
Born in Kilauea, Kauai on July 21, 1927, she retired from the Westin Hotel, Kauai.
She is survived by her husband: Jenichi Shigematsu; Mother: Masei Higa; five sons: Dayne (Valerie) Shigematsu; Mitchell (Terry) Shigematsu; Ryan (Wendy) Shigematsu; Cleve (Gail) Shigematsu; Kent (Joni) Shigematsu; two daughters: Mona (Clay) Yamauchi; June (Glenn) Allianic; five brothers: Pete, Richard, Tom, Roy, & George Higa; one sister: Jean Anbe; 15 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; nieces & nephews.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, Dec. 20, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa from 12:30 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. where services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Burial to follow at Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe. Casual attire is suggested.
