Forward Austin Alquiza scored a team-high 19 points and Desmond Rodrigues added 14 to lead the Menehune to a lopsided 74-22 victory over the Academy of the Pacific Thursday at the Kapa’a High School Basketball Tournament at Bernice Hundley.
The Menehune have won four straight, and their latest was the most convincing.
Waimea raced to a 26-2 first quarter lead and never looked back. The 2001 Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation champions forced 17 Academy turnovers and committed just 7 of their own. They out-rebounded the visiting team, 27-18.
Rodrigues added 4 steals and 3 rebounds to his 14 points. Josh Vinzant followed with 12 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals.
Jordon Dizon, Jay Parinas, and Lanikai Kanahele each had 6 points, Jeremy McDown had 5 and Jeremy Manuel 3.
Academy was led by Masa Yamamoto with 7 points, Brandon Mitchell had 6 points and 3 rebounds and Daniel Turner added 5 points and 3 rebounds.
Ben Butler had nearly half of his team’s point total in blocks with 7. He also had 4 points and 9 rebounds.
