1st Filipino Infantry Regiment U.S. Army vets honored

A Kaua’i-premiere showing of “Untold Triumph” was held at Kaua’i Community College’s Performing Arts Center on Sunday evening.

The documentary film tells the story of the 1st and 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments, U.S. Army, who served in World War II in the Philippines.

Kaua’i members of the regiments included the father of Kapa’a-raised “Untold Triumph” filmmaker Stephanie Castillo who brought home from the Philippines his war bride Norma. Also attending the showing were Kaua’i members of the regiments including: Domingo Los Banos, and Victor Bigno, William Bonachita, Bernard Castillo, Antonio Dana, Domingo Lutao, Ernest Mindoro and Jose Pagala. Other Kaua’i veterans from the regiments are: Elpidio Aquino, Al Berales, Magua Hesapene, Raymond Hesapene and Patricio Licayan.

The documentary film was shown on Kaua’i as a featured presenation of the Hawaii International Film Festival, and is to have theatrical release in late November in Honolulu to qualify for a possible Academy Awards nomination.The film is scheduled to be shown again on Kaua’i in February, and possibly as a PBS broadcast in the spring.
