School participation mixed in Kids Voting

The chart shows a mixed bag of turnout numbers for Kaua’i public and private schools, with some schools including Waimea High recording zero passwords issued by teachers, zero classrooms involved in Kids Voting, and hence zero votes cast on or before election day.

By contrast, neighboring Waimea Canyon School, with grades from preschool to eight, had a 62 percent turnout. Kekaha’s St. Theresa School also had a high turnout, 61 percent, and Eleele School recorded one of the best turnout percentages in the state, over 82 percent. Kapaa Middle School recorded a 72 percent turnout, though nearby Kapaa Elementary had one of the lowest turnout percentages on the island, 15.8 percent.

Several schools joined Waimea High in not participating in Kids Voting, including Kahili Adventist School, Kauai Christian Academy, Ni’ihau School and Seacliff School, according to the Kids Voting administrative Web site.

Of those schools on Kaua’i actively participating, Island School had the lowest turnout, 6.5 percent, followed by Hanalei School, 12.8 percent, and Koloa School, around 13 percent.

There was a mechanism for those children not issued passwords by teachers to vote with adults at certain polling places across the state Tuesday, but without teacher-issued passwords it is impossible to track schools of origin among those votes cast.

So, it was possible that some students at those schools listed with zero registered students may have voted Tuesday.

Statewide, over 180,000 passwords were issued, and just over 58,000 youth votes cast, for a turnout of just over 32 percent.

Statewide, some 4,802 students got passwords and voted Tuesday at adult polling places, but couldn’t be positively matched to their respective schools.
