A man died after his pickup truck was found overturned in the Upper Kapahi Reservoir last night about 8:45 p.m., according to a spokesperson for the Kaua’i Fire Department.
Upon arrival, firefighters Bryan Doo and Gerald Shin of the Kapa’a Station found the truck upside down under the water. They dove in and retrieved the man.
He was a local man, in his late teens to early 20s, and was driving a blue or gray pickup truck, said KFD Battalion Chief Bob Kaden. Kaden said that upon bringing the victim to the surface, he was not breathing and did not have a pulse.
Personnel from American Medical Response and traffic investigations officers from the Kaua’i Police Department also responded to the scene. Police are investigating the accident and were not available for comment.
Kaden said firefighters arrived from the Kapa’a station to the reservoir, which is about four miles mauka of Kuhio Highway, in within nine minutes.
