MAKENA – Kaua’i’s Cory French topped the leaderboard with a 77 at an HSJGA Junior Tour Series event held at the Makena North Golf Course Saturday.
French’s 77 tied with Maui’s Bryan Bangerter in the 15-18 age group. Kurt Nino of Oahu was third with a 78, Chad Kajiwara, also of Oahu, was fourth with an 80. Other Kauaians in the event: Stephen Peeren shot a 96; Layne Morita finished with a 100.
Sean Ogawa was three-back of the leader in the 13-14 age bracket. Ogawa shot a 75, while Maui’s Thomas Robertson and Hawaii’s Sean Maekawa each shot a 72 to top the leaderboard. Aaron Castro of Maui placed third with a 74 and Ogawa followed in fourth. Other Kauaians on the list: Chad Nonaka was 10-strokes back with an 82.
Michelle Wie won the 15-18 girls age group with a 69, five strokes better than fellow Oahu resident Stephanie Kono, who shot a 74. And in 13-14 girls (stipulated round – 17 holes), Oahu’s Mari Chun took top honors with a 76. Hawaii’s Kim Kimberly was two strokes back with a 78. No Kauaians participated in the girls age brackets.
