A party is being held Saturday, Sept. 28 to celebrate the publication of “Kid from Kauai” by Robert Okazaki and Dorothy Hazzard.
The party is set for 5-7 p.m. at the Hanamaulu Caf.
The book tells the story of Bob Okazaki, a Kaua’i-born man who led an eventful life in Hawai’i and on the mainland. Okazaki was born in Hanama’ulu in 1910 and ran off to sea to join the Merchant Marine at the age of 19. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp, lived through four wars, was a hobo for a time and experienced Pearl Harbor. He later worked as a welder in Alaska and was know as “Hawaii Kai” for his speed at the trade.
In later life Okazaki was a noted grower of bromeliads. He died in 2001 after completing this memoir of his life.
Okazaki married Shizuko Uchima from Kaua’i, and the couple lived in Seattle for 17 years.
