The Kaua’i Police Department is looking to add some personality into Ka Hale Maka’i O Kaua’i (House of the Kaua’i Police) with displays of police memorabilia.
Photographs, uniforms, trophies and other mementos would instill more pride in the officers and build support for the KPD when members of the community come into the building, said Lt. Larry Manuel, Administrative and Technical Bureau.
“This is really going to show the history of the Kaua’i Police Department,” Manuel said.
Memorabilia will be displayed in hallways and common areas of the station. The new complex, just north of Vidinha Stadium, encompasses the Kaua’i Police Department headquarters, Prosecuting Attorneys’ office and Civil Defense Agency.
Manuel has already collected photographs from the 1940s – 70s, trophies from shooting contests and police uniforms from years past. Manuel said hopes to get more items like hats, pants and shirts to display complete uniforms; and is also looking for photographs and any other memorabilia. Items can be donated or loaned to the police department, and nameplates will show who donated or loaned each item, much like a museum display.
The grand opening ceremony of Ka Hale Maka’i O Kaua’i is scheduled for Oct. 25, 2 – 4 p.m. Escorted station tours will be held from 4 – 6 p.m. at 3990 Ka’ana St. in Lihu’e. If you have questions or items to donate, please call Lt. Manuel at 241-6751 or page him 644-6526.
