Russell Matsuyama, Jr., 21, of Lihu’e remains in critical condition at the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu following an altercation with another man early Sunday morning at Ahukini Pier.
The victim was transported from the Wilcox Memorial Hospital emergency room Sunday.
Justin Joseph Stiles, 20, of Kapa’a was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree assault in the incident.
The two men had a verbal exchange earlier in the evening, shook hands and then parted, according to police reports. Later a fight broke out between the two men when they met at approximately 3 a.m. at Ahukini Pier.
Police were called at 3:18 a.m. after Wilcox Hospital emergency room staff reported treating the assault victim, who was not transported via ambulance.
Stiles was arrested at 4:21 a.m. Sunday in Lihu’e.
Bail for Stiles was set at $10,000 and posted.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
