A seatless Kawasaki 600cc motorcycle with a red tank emblazoned with a raised plastic skull, a pair of Birkenstock-knockoff sandals and a cell phone were all that was left in the gutter fronting the Hanamaulu Restaurant and Tea House early Wednesday evening.
The motorcyclist skidaddled into a nearby neighborhood after crashing into a pickup truck, running a red light and skidding through an intersection in Hanama’ulu, finally laying his bike down near the entrance to the restaurant.
Patrol officer Joe Kaauwai initiated the chase near the Radisson Kauai Beach Resort, where he said the motorcyclist was clocked driving at 55 miles per hour in a 15 mph zone. The chase continued along Kuhio Highway, ending with the Hanama’ulu town wipe out.
A jingle of the cell phone provided Kaauwai with the probable identity of the errant motorcyclist when the device came to life with a call. Four callers quickly rang up, all wanting to talk with the fleeing fugitive.
Now the unregistered motorcycle, the sandals and the cell phone await their owner in the police evidence lot on Umi Street in Lihu’e.
As of Thursday afternoon, the KPD was still awaiting his return.
