Baby hospitalized after near drowning

A 3-1/2 month old boy required hospitalization for a near-drowning Wednesday after its mother reportedly left the baby alone in a bathtub for about five minutes.

The woman, 31, of Alealea Road in Ha’ena, said she left the baby in shallow water, in a plastic seat typically used for giving baby baths.

According to fire department reports, she called 9-11 and tried to resuscitate her son using CPR instructions over the phone by a Kaua’i Police Department dispatcher.

Upon arrival by the Fire Department, a police officer was attempting CPR. A firefighter continued CPR efforts using a pediatric mask; the baby was transported via American Medical Response ambulance to Wilcox Memorial Hospital.

According to fire department personnel, the baby was later transported to O’ahu where it remains on a ventilator.
