Girls V-Ball High School Challenge starts today

The 2002 Girls Volleyball High School Challenge, sponsored by the Aston Hotels and Resorts and Bank of Hawaii Insurance Services will be held at the Kaua’i High School gymnasium on the Garden Island from Thursday through Saturday.

The tourney features Santa Barbara (CA), Iowa, Ke Ola Ikaika, Oahu powerhouses Pearl City and Roosevelt, and the three KIF schools Kapa’a, Waimea and Kaua’i High.

Round robin play starts at 3 p.m. on Thursday and will continue into Friday’s competition.

Upon completion of round robin play, teams will be seeded and will begin a double elimination playoff to determine the overall tournament champion.

The elimination phase will run from Friday until all play is completed on Saturday, August 10th.

The third place match is tentatively scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday with the championship contest to follow.

Following the tournament, a banquet is scheduled to be held at the Lihue Hongwanji at 7 p.m., featuring the awards presentations and a photographic slide show of tournament action.

Thursday’s round robin play begins as follows (with all times tentative): 3 p.m. Iowa vs Ke Ola (Ct. 1), Santa Barbara vs Waimea (Ct. 2); 4 p.m. Roosevelt vs Kaua’i (Ct. 1), Kapa’a vs Pearl City (Ct. 2); 5 p.m. Ke Ola vs Kaua’i (Ct. 1), Waimea vs Pearl City (Ct. 2); 6 p.m. Iowa vs Roosevelt (Ct. 1), Santa Barbara vs Kapa’a (Ct. 2); 7 p.m. Ke Ola vs Roosevelt (Ct. 1), Waimea vs Kapa’a (Ct. 2); 8 p.m. Iowa vs Kaua’i (Ct. 1), Santa Barbara vs Pearl City (Ct. 2); 9 p.m. Iowa vs Santa Barbara (Ct. 1), Roosevelt vs Kapa’a (Ct. 2); 10 p.m. Ke Ola vs Waimea (Ct. 1), Kaua’i vs Pearl City.
