A woman remained hospitalized in stable but guarded condition Monday afternoon after a two-car crash at the north end of Wailua Golf Course near Leho Drive Monday morning.
The driver, a male, was attempting a U-turn on Kuhio Hwy. at about 8:40, according to police reports. Their rental car, a Dodge Neon, was originally headed towards Lihue when the driver pulled onto the mauka side of the highway shoulder. They were in the process of making a U-turn across three lanes of contra-flow traffic when they were struck sidelong by a northbound delivery van.
Police reported that both vehicles were “totaled” in the crash, said Lihue District Commander Lt. Ale Quibilan. Initial investigations did not reveal any laws were broken.
Police said all involved were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident, and the driver wasn’t in an area where making a U-turn is illegal, Quibilan said.
Eyewitnesses told The Garden Island that traffic was congested for more than an hour along Kuhio Hwy.
“It appears to be the visitor’s inattention to traffic,” Quibilan said. The area of the crash is located within a 50 mile-per-hour speed zone.
The couple, from New Jersey, were both transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital around 9 a.m. The driver was treated and released. His female companion was listed in stable but guarded condition as of late Monday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
