Application forms for recreational access to Major’s Bay are now available. Access is being made available through an agreement between the Navy’s Pacific Missile Range Facility and the County of Kaua’i.
The applications are available at county-run neighborhood centers across the island.
The beach recreational area is scheduled to be reopened to the public on Saturday, July 20.
A PMRF memorandum of agreement (MOA) must be filled out and taken to the Kauai Police headquarters on Umi Street in Lihu’e for a local agency check and certification. Once it is determined by KPD that the applicant has no felony convictions, the certified application may be presented to PMRF’s main gate for issuance of an identification card.
Applicants must be 18 years or older. Minor children under the age of 18 must be listed on the application form, and will be permitted on PMRF premises when accompanied by an ID card holder.
Processing of applications at the PMRF main gate will begin Monday, July 15 and will take place Monday through Friday from noon until 3 p.m. A system arranged alphabetically is being used, and applicants must come to the base only on the day allocated.
On Mondays those with last names beginning with the letter A-E will be processed. Tuesday: last names beginning with the letter F-J Wednesday: last names beginning with the letter K-O Thursday: last names beginning with the letter P-T Friday: last names beginning with the letter U-Z
This routine will continue weekly until most, if not all, applications for recreational passes have been processed. ID cards will then be issued Monday through Friday between noon and 3 p.m. on an as-needed basis.
PMRF’s Pass and Identification Office is located just past the main gate in building 353. The office is closed on weekends and all federal holidays.
