Marcus Laymon and Kurtis Low of Kapa’a won the Team Roping event and Mackenzie McCoy of Koloa took the Goat Tying championship at the Hawaii High School Rodeo Association’s 15th annual State Finals, which were held at Parker Ranch Arena June 8, 9 and 10.
The victories qualify the Kauaians for the National Rodeo Finals, which will take place in Farmington, New Mexico from July 22-28.
Approximately 35 Hawaii team members will compete against 1500 other contestants from 38 states, 4 Canadian Providences and Australlia in the largest rodeo in the world.
Hawaii contestants lease the horses from all over the country to compete against the nation’s best rodeo athletes.
Hawaii High School Rodeo Finals results: Alex Schuman, a sophomore at MaryKnoll High School, was named the All Around Cowboy of the tournament. Radford junior Ryanna Cambra earned All Around Cowgirl honors.
Schuman won the Boy’s Cutting, the Boy’s Calf Roping and the Boy’s Steer Wrestling events. Cambra topped the Girl’s Breakaway event.
In other events for boys: Ryan Porter of Pukalani is the Saddle Bronc Champion; and the Bull Riding events went to Sale Sproat of Kaunakakai.
For the girls, Jodi Deluz of Honokaa won Girl’s Cutting; Pole Bending went to Rachael Rincon of HPA; and Megan Capri of Kealakekua won the Barrel Racing event.
