Jordan Cox won the 13/14 boys division of the Hawaii Qualifer and earned himself a trip to the Junior World Championships in San Diego, which will take place in July.
Cox came back from a 75 first round to shoot a 69 in the second round for a total of 144, five strokes better than second place Chad Nonaka, another Lihue resident who shot a combined 151. Nonaka has also qualified for the Junior World Championships.
Also from Kauai in the 13/14 boys division: Kellen Watabu shot a 152, barely missing the cut; Bret Netzer shot a 155; Mike Garcia shot a 160; Sean Ogawa finished with a 163; Brandon Hirota finished with a 171; Jet Levinthol shot a 175; and Nikko Tacsiat shot a 175. For the girls 13/14, Kanoe Sakihama nearly qualified with a 165 (83, 82). Kimberly Yama shot a 176, Miki Ueoka shot a 179 and Mary Akutagawa finished with a 180.
For the girls 7/8’s, Lihue’s Kelli Oride came in second place with 141 to qualify.
In the 7/8 boys division, Justin Uegawa shot a 175 (89, 86).
Lihue’s T.J. Kua came in second at the Qualifier for the 11/12 boys division, shooting a 72 back and 67 front for a combined 135. He has qualified for San Diego. Fellow Kauaian Cyrus Ogata, from Kapa’a, shot a total of 141, which at fifth place on the leaderboard qualifies him for the Junior World Championship.
Others from Kauai in the 11/12: Eleele’s Grant Paiste shot a 152; Taylor Bell a 153; Travis Toguchi shot a 157; Cory Oride notched a 159; Mika Yoshioka shot a 163; Byron Rualizo shot a 165. In girls 11/12, Kapa’a’s Makana Sakihama shot a 166, good enough for sixth place.
Lehua Wise’s 83 second round slowed her 74 round one pace, but it left her with a 157 and will be the first alternate for a qualifying spot. Kiilani Matsuyoshi finished with a 170; Shelcie Takenouchi had a 176.
For boys 15/17, Allan Baab and Juston Thomas each ended with 152, close but not low enough for a qualifying spot. Billy Toy shot a 170, Layne Morita a 171.
In the boys 9/10, Lihue’s Wily Yoshioka shot a 146 and Kalaheo’s Shea Shimabukuro shot a 147 to top the Kauaians on the list. For girls 9/10, Lihue’s Rae-lyn Morikawa was six strokes off qualifying with a 149. Her 78 back nine got her near the mark.
