This Saturday, June 15 is a red-letter date for several local volunteer groups.
That is the day Kauai Nursery & Landscaping, Inc. is formally done with its portion of the installation and maintenance of landscaping associated with the massive beautification effort near the intersections of Ahukini Road and Kapule Highway near Lihu’e Airport.
According to Lelan Nishek, owner of KNL, that means the responsibilities of mowing and tree-trimming will fall back to the state, with a host of volunteer groups already signed on to trim bougainvillea and maintain certain portions of the gateway project for a period of two years.
After that, the entire project becomes the state’s responsibility, he said.
Speaking to the Lihue Business Association at Fenton Lee’s Hawaiian Classic Desserts restaurant on Rice Street, Nishek said that volunteer maintenance will probably be needed every three months, beginning around the middle of next month.
The state may provide some fertilizer and weed-killing chemicals to the volunteer maintenance groups, he added.
