The proposed two-classification state football playoff system with a four team Division II tournament for smaller schools was temporarily nixed, and Judo has become a state tourney sport.
These were just two of the many proposals voted on at the HIADA meeting, which was held on Kaua’i from Sunday through Tuesday.
Along with the proposals, locations and dates were established for future State Tournament Championships.
Bowling became the only sport to host a tournament on Kaua’i for the 2002-2003 season. Girls Golf will come to Kaua’i for the 2003-2004 season.
The final decisions:
Golf Proposal: Passed 36-27-1 – Move Boys Golf from the spring to the fall sports season.
Judo Proposal: Passed 63-0-0 – That HHSAA add Judo as a state tournament sport and have it placed in the spring season
Football Proposal Part I: Failed 34-37-0 – Two-classification state football playoff system with a 4 team Division II tournament. Part II: Passed 66-0-0 – HHSAA form a committee comprised of one athletic director from each league to study the feasibility and implementation of Division II tournaments (HHSAA will allow the leagues to pick their committee person)
Bowling Proposal Part I: Passed 63-0-1 – That HHSAA work with the Youth American Bowling Alliance, the sanctioning body for all youth bowling in the United States. To have the HHSAA Bowling Tournament and all leagues that qualify bowlers for the tournament, sanctioned by the YABA, to enable bowlers, both in the state tournament and in the various leagues to receive local and national recognition and awards for high scores. Part II: Failed 12-52-2 – Change format total pin fall to Baker format to determine champion.
Cross Country Proposal: Failed 31-37-3 – Increase the number of entrants at the state meet to 200 entries.
Volleyball Proposal: Passed 42-16-0 – Change State Volleyball tournament from present pool-play format to coincide with the rest of the 12-team bracketed formats i.e. basketball, baseball, soc
