A Kapa’a man remained in critical condition at Wilcox Memorial Hospital Wednesday after being thrown from his car during a one-vehicle incident near the entrance to the Kauai Marriott Resort & Beach Club early Wednesday morning.
According to police, the driver, alone in his vehicle, was traveling eastbound up Rice Street heading toward Lihu’e around 12:25 a.m., when he apparently lost control of the vehicle.
The car flipped, and the victim, who police said was not wearing his seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle, and suffered skull and facial injuries, and possible neck injuries. The car came to rest in the eastbound lane, according to responding officers.
The victim was taken via American Medical Response ambulance to the Wilcox emergency room and intensive care unit, where the family made a decision not to fly the man to Honolulu for additional treatment, said Kauai Police Department Sgt. Mark Scribner of the Traffic Safety unit.
Speed is suspected to be a factor in the accident, though yesterday it was not known if alcohol may have also been a factor, police said.
