Hawaiian Tug & Barge and Young Brothers, Limited, with offices and operations at Nawiliwili Harbor, have begun a second year of providing grants to nonprofit community organizations, and are urging qualifying groups to apply for awards up to $3,000 per group.
The mission of the charitable arm of the companies is to give recognition and support to deserving charitable community organizations on all the islands.
On Kaua’i, a volunteer committee can award up to $15,000 in grants a year, said Wendell Kam, Kaua’i manager for Young Brothers and Hawaiian Tug & Barge.
The local volunteer committee that screens all applications and makes awards includes Millie Wellington, Wanda Shibata, Jim McDowall and Donald Lindsey, retired Young Brothers Kaua’i manager.
Community organizations wishing to apply for grants must be bona fide nonprofit entities as certified under Internal Revenue Service rules for 501(c)3 entities; and have organizational purposes related to health, education, civic and community service, youth activities, cultural enrichment, environment and special community projects.
There are no specific deadlines for applications, but awards are based at least in part on availability of funds in each year’s endowment.
Application forms are available at the Hawaiian Tug & Barge and Young Brothers office, 3020 Wa’apa Rd., Nawiliwili. For more information, please call Kam, 245-4051.
