The Hilo Storm’s offense was electric, and there wasn’t much a grounded Kaua’i Cowboy team could do about it.
Storm quarterback Lance De Silva completed 16 of 26 pass attempts for 235 yards to blank the Cowboys 36-0 in a Hawaiian Football League (HFL) matchup at Vidinha Stadium on Saturday.
The win improves Hilo to 3-0 and a comfortable first place lead in the HFL standings; the Cowboys fall to 0-2.
Kaua’i showcased vast improvements on Saturday from its 26-6 loss to the Na Kani Koa the weekend before, but its offense still lacked potency. The Cowboys were held to 110 yards of offense – 49 yards in the air, 61 yards on the ground. Quarterback Kia Hale completed 4 of 13 passes for 49 yards, and ran for 25 yards on 17 carries.
The Cowboy defense didn’t fair much better.
A 25-yard touchdown reception from Storm receiver Leroy Shelton (6 catches, 69 yards) opened the scoring with 1:26 remaining in the first. Wide-out Chris Kegler scored on a 40-yard reception with 4:50 left in the second quarter, and the Storm led 14-0 at half.
The Storm stuck it to the Cowboys in the final two periods.
Keone Ah Loo’s fumbled his own interception early in the third, which Shelton recovered and ran 43-yards to the third Storm score.
Hale was sacked for a safety mid-third period, giving Hilo a 23-0 lead, and moments later, Roy Kalili ran in a touchdown from one-yard out to put the Storm up by 29.
With four minutes left in the fourth, the Storm added hardship to sorrow with a 32-yard Kalili touchdown reception. Hilo would never allow the Cowboys to reach the end-zone.
