He didn’t want to be interviewed, didn’t want to have his picture taken, and probably didn’t even want to be considered for Employee of the Year status.
But Kaumakani’s Ronald “Ronnie” Alicante, who voluntarily stepped down from a working lot supervisor’s position to return to a regular employee because he liked his choices of days off, was recently named Kaua’i Employee of the Year for Budget Rent a Car-Hawaii’s Lihu’e Airport operations.
Now a customer service agent, he washes and vacuums cars, trucks and vans, but had been an alternate lead person (supervisor) during some of the time he has been with Budget.
With Budget since 1995, Alicante accepted 2001 Employee of the Year honors despite not having been nominated once as Employee of the Quarter last year. He won airline tickets and $500.
Budget employees nominate their own co-workers for both the quarterly and annual honors, and station management picked Alicante because of his friendliness, flexibility, and work ethic.
Even when recent wet weather meant cars were being returned dirtier than normal, he carried out his duties in a professional manner, said his supervisors.
Alicante “demonstrates the commitment to island-style service and quality that has become a Budget tradition,” said Keith Nakamura, regional vice president.
Budget Rent a Car has served Hawai’i for 40 years, offering the largest selection of specialty vehicles including Jaguar, Ranger pickups and, more recently, trucks and moving supplies.
