HONOLULU – Waiakea rallied from a ten-point deficit early in the second half to defeat Kapa’a 51-41 in a consolation round battle of Warriors in the 2002 Hawaiian Airlines Girls State Basketball Championships.
Kapa’a scored the game’s first six points and expanded the lead to 29-19 with 7:03 remaining in the third quarter. Waiakea then went on a 13-0 run and taking the lead for good 30-29 on Kristine Irvine’s basket with 45 seconds left. The Big Island Warriors scored the first eight points of the final quarter to seal the win.
Ashley Kualii scored 21 and Jobette Nabarro added 17 to pace Waiakea. High for Kapaa was Kanoe Arinaga with 20 points.
Waiakea (11-5), the BIIF runner-up, advances to Friday’s consolation final. KIF champion Kapa’a ends its season with a 7-3 record.
