After four years of racquetball tournament inactivity, Kauai Athletic Club played host to a premier tournament. The 2002 Garden Island Classic racquetball tournament. Expecting a small draw for our first tournament, we were pleasantly surprised with 74 players filing 5 divisions and 19 events. Players came from Oahu, Maui and the Big Island, and Kauai had a record of 36 players participating! The tournament ran like clockwork thanks to Tournament Directors, Phil Eliana and Dean Agustin. And, also, to the Tournament Committee, Carlynn Yamauchi, Frank Puni, Ryan Domingsel, and of course, thanks to the Kauai players who supported and helped with the tournament and showed the outer island players what Kauai hospitality is all about! Special thanks goes out to our generous tournament sponsors: Coldwell B anker, Bali Hai Realty, Robert A. Melnikoff, Coca Cola Bottling Co., Country Moon – The Mother of all juice bars, Ektelon, Head/Penn, E-force, Island Arts & Graphics, Hyatt Regency Kauai, Plantation Gardens – Piatti, Pictures Plus, Camp House Grill, Nick Morrison, Carol Pratt
Thanks to T&R trophies for doing such a fine job on the trophies, as always! With the success of this tournament, we look forward to making this an annual event. And, when word gets out about the great time had by all, we’re sure to get even more players next year. Way to go, Kauai! Additionally, we had some great prize giveaways with the following KAC players winning these awesome prizes:
Andra Ota – Ektelon Vendetta Racquet
Clyde Weddell – Ektelon Power Fan Racquet
David Schad – Ektelon Pullover Sweater
Julie Lester – Ektelon Tournament Bag
Gerald Miller – Ektelon Rebel racquet
Again thanks to all the participants for supporting this tournament, and congratulations to all the winners!
