HONOLULU – OIA runner-up Kahuku scored 17 unanswered points in the first quarter on its way to an easy 65-40 victory over KIF champion Kapa’a in Tuesday’s opening game of the 2002 Hawaiian Airlines Girls State Basketball Championships at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Mereani Lewenilovo scored six of her game-high 23 points as the more athletic Red Raiders raced to a 19-3 first quarter lead and never were threatened. After Ihilani Yama scored Kapa’a’ s only first quarter field goal with 7:10 left to tie the score at 2, Kahuku dominated the rest of the quarter, forcing numerous turnovers and fast-breaking its way to easy baskets.
Tania Tasic led the Warriors with 13 points.
Kapa’a drops into the consolation bracket.
