KAPAA – The Waimea Menehune girls junior varsity basketball team unveiled a tough 2-1-2 zone defense and controlled the boards on both ends of the court to defeat the Kapa’a Warriors, 41-14, Friday night at the Bernice Hundley gym.
The Menehunes immediately raced to a 13-0 lead in the first five minutes of the contest on the strength of Mallorie Hepas inside post play, Kristine Sisons accuracy from the perimeter, and Jessica Jacintos offensive put-backs.
Pilialoha Keaweamahi got the Warriors on the scoreboard with :45 left in the period with a bank shot from the top of the paint.
Tori Kagawa and Tiara Kali dropped in long-range buckets at the start of the second quarter as the Menehunes extended their lead.
Warrior guard Theresa Taylor found Samdi Makepa behind the Waimea defense for a lay-in to cut the deficit to 19-5.
Both teams spent the majority of their time at the charity stripe over the last five minutes of the half and the Menehunes went into intermission up 29-6.
The third period was a low scoring affair marked by lots of missed shots and spirited play as Waimea built its lead to a 27-point advantage.
Both squads battled evenly in the final quarter as turnovers limited offensive chances.
Keaweamahi cashed in 4 of her team-high 8 points for the Warriors, who fell to 0-4 on the season.
Hepa led all scorers with 10 points, while Menehune point guard Melissa Moreno added 7.
The undefeated Menehunes, who improved to 3-0 under the tutelage of Head Coach Alex Naumu and assistant (former Menehune standout) Niko Naumu, next host the idle Kauai Red Raiders (2-1) at the Clem Gomes gym on Tuesday, April 17, in a critical 5:30 p.m. match-up.
