Unfortunately for those who wanted to get to bed early Friday night, neither do the Kaua’i Red Raiders.
Each team battled through an overtime thriller, but Melody Manuel’s bucket and foul and two cushion free-throws from Ashley Meir in overtime sent the Menehunes to a 61-58 victory over the Red Raiders at Clem Gomes gymnasium.
The Menehunes improve to 1-1 in the regular season; the Red Raiders fall to 0-2.
Waimea trailed by as much as 10 at one point and were down for much of the game, but they outscored Kaua’i 17-8 in an electric fourth period and breathed new life with extra minutes.
Leaders for the Menehunes: Manuel led the Menehunes with 18 points, two rebounds, one assist and two steals; Ashley Vea had 15 points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal; Erin Castillo had eight points (all in the 4rth and overtime period), two rebounds, one assist and two steals; Virginia Aguilar had seven points an a team leading eight rebounds; Janna Soto had four points and two rebounds; Alexis Nawai had two points and three rebounds.
Leaders for the Red Raiders: Delsa Tavana led with 17 points, 9 rebounds; Erin Garlie had 10 points, 8 rebounds, one assist; Kehau Regidor had eight poitns, four rebounds, four steals, two assists; Kelly Dennis had eight points, one rebound; Amber Santos had four points, two rebounds, one block; Krystalin Kashiwabara had four rebounds, four assists and two points. Belinda Butac had three points, one assist; Farren Higley had two points, three rebounds.
