A memorial service will be held Monday, April 8, at Immaculate Conception Church for Jerry Hulse, of Kaua’i and California.
Hulse died Jan. 20, 2002, in Burbank, Calif. at the age of 77.
A renowned travel journalist, Hulse was editor of the Los Angeles Times Travel section from 1960 through 1991 and traveled extensively during his career. He maintained a condominium in Kapa’a and divided his time between California and Kaua’i.
During the months he spent on Kaua’i each year, he was an active member of Immaculate Conception Church and was heavily involved with renovation efforts.
His career took him around the world more times than he could count and it was reported in a respected journalism publication that Hulse was “widely considered to be the best travel writer in the country.” His many honors and accolades included the French government’s Legion of Honor as well as recognition and respect from top travel officials and journalists. A lengthy tribute in the newspaper he served for over 30 years said that travel industry veterans believed Hulse played a crucial role in the shaping of American thinking about travel. He has also been credited for his influence in popularizing Hawai’i as a visitor destination.
Jerry Hulse is survived by two sons, Richard of Simi Valley, Calif. and Bo of Marina del Rey, Calif.; two grandchildren and special friend, Hilda Cannon of Kaua’i.
The memorial service will begin at 4 p.m.
Alton Gardner
Alton Kawanaao Gardner of Anahola, Kaua’i, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, on April 1, 2002, at the age of 52.
Born in Lihu’e, Kaua’i, he was a mechanic with the automotive industry.
He is survived by his two brothers: Clarence (Nani) Gardner of Lawa’i; Edean Gardner of Anahola; two sisters: Iris (Darriel) Woodward of California; Loyann Gardner of Anahola, many nieces, nephews, uncles and aunties.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, April 5, 2002, at Anahola Beach Park (Pillars) at 11 a.m. Scattering of Alton’s cremains out at sea will be held after the memorial services at Pillars. Casual attire is suggested. Flowers omitted.
Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Robert Q. Castro
Pastor Robert Q. Castro, of Lihu’e, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2002, at the age of 62.
Born in Port Arthur, Texas on Sept. 5, 1939, he was a Pastor with Breath of Life Christian Ministries.
He is survived by his wife: Irma Castro of Lihu’e; one son: Troy Castro of Los Angeles, two brothers: Al Castro of Arkansas and David Castro of Utah.
Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, April 7, at Breath of Life Christian Ministries, 4303 Rice St., Lihu’e, at 4 p.m. For more information call 246-6102. Breath of Life is located next to Lihu’e Lanes in the Rice Shopping Center.
Faustino Gacusan
Faustino Angaangan Gacusan, Sr., of Kekaha, Kaua’i, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, on April 1, 2002, at the age of 76.
Born in Candon Ilocos Sur Philippines, on February 11, 1926, He was a groundskeeper for a private firm.
He is survived by five daughters: Dolly (Melanio) Gonzalo of Canada; Lina (Sonny) Barba of Kekaha; Gloria Gacusan of Philippines; Esther (Rolando) Galimba of Philippines. Six sons: Eric (Edna) Gacusan of Kaumakani; Faustino Jr, (Glory) Gacusan of Hanapepe; Segundino (Imelda) Gacusan of Saudi Arabia; Reynaldo (Marlina) Gacusan of Saudi Arabia; Edwin Gacusan of Las Vegas; Ricardo (Cora) Gacusan of Philippines, 18 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, April 5, 2002, at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Kekaha, from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Rosary at 7 p.m. Visitation again on Saturday, April 6, 2002, at St. Theresa Catholic Church from 7:30 a.m. Mass to be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. by Father Larry. Burial to follow at the Kekaha Public Cemetery. Casual attire is suggested.
