KAPAA – Anna Quibilan scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Kaua’i Red Raider junior varsity girls squad to a convincing 46-23 season-opening victory over the Kapa’a Warriors at the Bernice Hundley gymnasium Saturday evening.
The Raiders jumped out to an early 9-3 advantage after one period on the strength of three Ashley Belisario free throws and a trio of baseline jumpers by Quibilan.
The teams battled in the second as the Warriors offense finally got untracked.
Rachel Boshears, Theresa Taylor and Pilialoha Keaweamahi each contributed 4 points in the period for Kapa’a.
The second half was dominated by the Raiders as they alternated their stifling zone defense with a full court press to force numerous Warrior turnovers into easy scoring opportunities.
Ten Raiders found their way into the scoring column led by the dominating Quibilan. Teammates Belisario and Amber Thronas chipped in with seven and six points respectively.
Keaweamahi battled underneath throughout the contest to lead the Warriors with eight points.
The Warriors (0-1) will travel to the Clem Gomes gym on Tuesday, April 2, for the Waimea Menehunes season opener. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. with the varsity contest to follow.
The Raiders (1-0) will be idle until Fridays (April 5) west-side road trip to play the Menehunes.
