Wailua native Kendyce Manguchei is now a staff reporter with the editorial department of The Garden Island.
Manguchei is a 1996 graduate of Kauai High School. In May 2001 she received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communications from New Mexico State University after transferring from Kauai Community College.
She is the daughter of Deborah Rabot, a resident of New Mexico; and Kenneth Manguchei, who works in Puhi. She has two younger brothers: James, who is looking forward to starting college next fall; and Kenford, a student at Pima Community College in Tucson, Ariz.
Manguchei worked as an intern for The Indianapolis Star under the competitive Dow Jones Newspaper Fund news editing program. She edited Web reports and special sections for the Star from June to August 2001. While attending New Mexico State, Manguchei worked at the campus paper, The Round Up, as a photographer and reporter. She also won several photography awards from the Southern New Mexico State Fair and Rodeo in 2000 and 2001, including first place in landscape and special effects.
Her other interests include sampling exotic and foreign foods, going on road trips and bicycling. She’s particularly interested in environmental and cultural issues.
