The youngest baseball team in the KIF is a perfect 2-0.
The Kaua’i Red Raiders came back from one-run deficits in both games of Saturday’s double-header at Vidinha Stadium to leave the Waimea Menehunes winless in KIF Baseball’s regular season opener.
Down 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Shawn Ogata sliced a double down the left-field line to score Titus Hori and Alaric Villatora and give Kaua’i a 3-2 first game win.
Red Raider pitcher Alec Reichle picked up the save. Kalailoa Taniguchi pitched his first loss.
Waimea jumped to a 1-0 lead on a Brandon Ishibashi RBI single in the second inning, but Casey Oketani launched an inside-the-park, three-RBI home run to score Ogata and Scott Serizawa, and Kaua’i would win game two, 3-2.
“This team proves time-and-time again it’s scrappy and it won’t roll over,” said Red Raider head coach Kevin Medeiros. “We did it in preseason, and we did it again Saturday.”
On Kaua’i’s pitching:
“Both Jake Oketani and Alec Reichle played as expected,” Medeiros added. “They are young, but talented, and are the backbone of this team. As long as they match the physical with the mental, they will continue to play good baseball.”
The surprise bunch:
“At a time when our 2, 4, and 5 batters weren’t hitting, our 6, 7, and 8 batters, along with our pinch-hitters, were coming through. We were rather fortunate.”
Medeiros’ final word:
“Great playing but this is only the beginning,” Medeiros told his team after the games. “The only thing [Saturday] gaurantees is a 2-10 record.”
