Free workshops on accessing and using data from the 2000 Census are set for Tuesday, March 12, at Kaua’i Community College.
The sessions, both covering the same information, are 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., in the KCC business building, room 111.
Both are hands-on workshops using computers and the Internet to access Census data so specific it will allow participants to discover, for example, the number and percentage of Filipino homeowners in Puhi.
The workshops focus on specific portions of the Census data, called Summary File 1 and Summary File 2.
The files feature information compiled from questions asked of every person and about each housing unit, and cover household relationship, sex, age, race, origin, tenure, and vacancy characteristics for specific neighborhoods.
Newly released data from Summary File 2 for Hawai’i will provide the same type of characteristics as Summary File 1, but with more detailed race information.
For example, specific information about numbers of male and female Tongans, age information about the Native Hawaiian population, data on single-parent Chinese families, and other specifics are available.
The workshops will also highlight uses of census data for potential new business site location and marketing, funding proposals, analyzing neighborhoods for delivery of social services and planning, and other purposes.
The sessions will also discuss social and economic data to be released later this year, and a schedule of when other Census 2000 information will be released.
Since the Internet is the main method being used by the Census Bureau to distribute Census 2000 data, having access to a computer is critical for getting most Census information.
Just 10 percent of Census 2000 data will be published in paper form. Data to be released later will include information on income, languages spoken at home, education levels, occupation, and other facts.
Pre-registration is required for the workshops. Please call one of the sponsors, the county Office of Economic Development, 241-6390, for registration and more information.
Other sponsors include the KCC Office of Continuing Education and Training, KCC business division, and Los Angeles regional office of the U.S. Census Bureau.
