The Kapa’a Warrior girls basketball team finished up a three-game stint in Honolulu, flew back to Kaua’i one half-and-hour before their game at Bernice Hundley, and were still able to pull out a 36-27 win over King Kekaulike.
They looked tired, but they fought hard.
Sharlene Carillo led the Warriors with 10 points, eight rebounds and one steal. Jasmine Stevenson and Ihilani Yama each notched six points and combined for five steals and 11 rebounds.
Despite the Warrior’s shooting woes, they limited the Na Alii to just two points in the first period. King Kekaulike was able to tie it up at six apiece in the second, but the rebounding of Danielle Hill (eight rbs.) along with one of her smooth lay-ins put Kapa’a up 10-6 at the half.
The Warriors poured it on in the third. They outscored the Na Alii 15-7 in the period, and it provided enough of a cushion to cruise the rest of the way to their first pre-season win.
Kanoe Arinaga had four points, three steals and one assist; Danielle Hill had four points with her eight rebounds; Tania Tasic had five points, five rebounds and one steal; Brianne States scored two points, three rebounds; Tescilly Macquire had three rebounds, one steal; Bristol King had three points and one steal; Jackie Alapai had one reobound, one assist; Nichol Kunioka-Volz had one rebound, one assist.
In the 12th Annual Fila-Lady Tiger Challenge, Kapa’a went 0-3, often facing top 5 teams in Hawaii. They fell to Kalaheo 66-21, to McKinley 51-22, and to Kamehameha 44-13.
