With the win, the Red Raiders even up their pre-season record at 1-1; King Kekaulike will next face Waimea at Clem Gomes gym tonight at 7 p.m.
Forward Erin Garlie led Kaua’i with 10 points, eight rebounds, and three steals. She shot 63% from the field (5-8 shooting) and added a block to round the stats sheet.
The only significant scorer for King Kekaulike was Rachelle Furtado, who had 15 points on four treys and three free-throws (3-6 FT).
The Red Raiders opened a 16-9 first quarter lead on four Garlie points and a pretty steal-to-bucket series from Melinda Butae (7 pts, 3-8, 3 as, 4 rbs, 3 st.).
Tania Racelo’s (6 pts, 3-8, 4 as, 4 rbs, 1 st.) break-away lay-in set a quick tempo for Kaua’i at the onset of the second, and the Raider speed confused Kekaulike defenders.
Kaua’i held Kekaulike scoreless in the second, taking a 33-9 lead into the second half, and they would roll the rest of the way.
Kaua’i outscored the Na Alii 10-8 in the third, and 24-6 in the fourth, to seal their first pre-season win.
