ST CATHERINE School students are all ears as anti-smoking advocate Jeffrey Wigand dissects a cigarette so the students could get a first-hand feel for what Wigand labels the “Low Tar Lie.” Armed with data from the hour-long presentation, Wigand urged students to go out with their new-found knowledge and educate others. Wigand is the man whose story became the basis for the acclaimed 1999 film, “The Insider,” which tells of his work in exposing behind the scenes doings of the tobacco industry. A scientist and educator, Wigand achieved national prominence in 1995 when he became the tobacco industry’s highest ranking former executive to address public health and smoking issues. His appearance on “60 Minutes” exposed the industry’s disregard for health and safety and brought him into the public eye. During Wigand’s visit to Kaua’i,, the state Department of Health is conducting training a training sessions on the sale of cigarettes to underage buyers.
