Following the burglary of the Touch of Elegance beauty salon in Lihu’e last week, owner Susan Cayabyab sought justice.
With the help of the Honolulu Police Department, three tickets to Janet Jackson’s concert at Aloha Stadium on O’ahu last Saturday and stadium security officers, Cayabyab got some satisfaction: Three women were taken into custody at the concert, but were not arrested.
Cayabyab hopes a joint investigation by the Honolulu Police and the Kaua’i Police Department will result in the recovery of stolen goods whose value she estimates at up to $12,000.
The burglary of Cayabyab’s business on Kuhio Highway was reported to police at 11:45 p.m. by a neighbor who saw one door ajar and a black bag in front of the store.
Cayabyab said she was afraid and nervous when police officers stopped by her home at midnight to inform her about the burglary.
“I have been in business six years and I have never had anything like this happen to me,” Cayabyab said. At least two other businesses were burglarized the same night, she was told by officers.
Though shaken, Cayabyab said she was determined to find the culprits who took electronic entertainment equipment, two digital cameras, compact discs and other items from her store.
She said she was particularly upset over the theft of three tickets to the Janet Jackson concert because she loves her singing.
Cayabyab bought the tickets for her family, including one of two sons, Honolulu police officer Arnold Cayabyab, and friends. Three other tickets were not taken because Ms. Cayabyab kept them some place else.
Incensed over the burglary, Cayabyab initiated a plan with the Honolulu police, including Arnold Cayabyab, who was stationed at the stadium for the concert, management at Aloha stadium and security officers to track down the culprits.
Cayabyab flew to O’ahu, and on the night of the show, she and her five guests sat at the seats she bought.
Three women sat in seats behind them, prompting a complaint from a person who bought tickets for seats occupied by the women.
Three Honolulu police officers and stadium security officers subsequently detained the women.
“It was all so stressful, but at least I got to see Janet Jackson,” Cayabyab said.
